This fish is one of the largest freshwater in the world, and also known as cod in the Amazon. Its name comes from Tupi two terms: pirá, "fish" and annatto, "red" due to the color of its tail.

In Indian mythology
Pirarucu was an Indian who belonged to the tribe of uaiás, who inhabited the plains of southwestern Amazonia. He was a brave warrior, but had a wicked heart, even as the son of Pindar, a man of good heart and head of the tribe.
Pirarucu was full of vanity, selfishness and too proud of his power. One day, while his father was a friendly visit to neighboring tribes, Pirarucu took advantage of the opportunity to take hostage the Indian village and run them without any reason. Pirarucu also loved to criticize the gods.
Tupa, the god of gods, Pirarucu observed for a long time, until they decided to punish behavior tired of Pirarucu. Tupa Polo called and ordered him espalhase his most powerful lightening in the whole area. He also called Iururaruaçu, the goddess of streams, and ordered it to provoke the strongest torrents of rain on Pirarucu, who was fishing with other Indians the banks of the Tocantins River, not far from the village.
The fire Tupa was seen throughout the forest. When Pirarucu saw the wild waves of the river and heard the angry voice of Tupa, he just ignored them with a laugh and words of contempt. Then Tupa sent Chandoré, the demon who hates men, to shoot lightning and thunder on Pirarucu, filling the air with light. Pirarucu tried to escape, but as he ran through the branches of trees, lightning lightning sent by Chandoré, hit the heart of the warrior who even then refused to apologize.
All those who were with Pirarucu ran into the jungle terribly frightened, while the body of Pirarucu, still alive, was taken to the depths of the Tocantins River and transformed into a giant, dark fish. Pirarucu waters disappeared and never returned, but for a long time been the terror of the region
